General purpose containers also called dry containers, are all purpose containers. It is a completely enclosed container that is waterproof and keeps the goods in it dry throughout the voyage. It has a rigid roof, walls and floors. It is the most common type of container and can load most types of cargo. There are some variations for carrying heavy liquid cargo and dry bulk cargo.
Shipping Containers For Heavy Load
Flat rack containers have collapsible sides. It is a simple storage container that is ideal for shipping oversized cargo, like construction materials, heavy machinery, vehicles, and big reels. The end walls can be secured and stable. A 40 inch flat rack container can carry about 45 metric tons of goods. Double door containers can be opened from the front and the back. Also known as a tunnel container, it eases loading and unloading goods. It is ideal to store iron and steel. It keeps the cargo protected from all elements.
Open top containers have a removable top and are most useful for goods that are over a certain height and cannot be loaded through the sides. Tall machinery and bulky finished products can be loaded using a crane or rolling bridge. It is available in 20 inch and 40 inch sizes. High cube containers are taller by one foot compared to general purpose containers. It comes in 40’ and 45’ sizes and is used to carry a big volume of cargo. Open side containers are the same as general purpose containers with a difference that it can be opened from all sides. It provides much easy access for loading and unloading. It is used to provide adequate space for extra large goods that can’t fit through regular doors.
Shipping Containers For Light Load
Shipment of meat, vegetables and fruits should be done through temperature controlled shipping containers. ISO shipping containers are temperature regulated containers that depend on external power. It is made of cor-ten steel which is also known as weathering steel. Insulated containers are similar to ISO containers but it can be regulated to withstand higher temperatures. They have a mechanical compressor to heat or cool the air within the container.
Half height shipping containers are used for transporting bulk and dense cargos like stones and coal. They are versatile, robust, easy to load and unload, and can be handled in a rough industrial environment. Tank containers are used for transporting liquid materials. They are made of anti corrosive substances or strong steel. They should not be filled over 95% or below 80%.
